Grade II listed Darent Hulme

The original house was built in 1869 by the geologist Sir Joseph Prestwich. The irregular 5 bay house was later divided into two properties.
Through a considered approach Sophie and Chris’s brief was incorporated into a sensitive intervention that results in minimal increase in floor area but provides massive gains for the way the home functions. As part of the proposals the kitchen was moved into what used to be a cold, unwelcoming study. The space was extended both upward to allow for a vaulted ceiling and the style of the existing listed rear porch was extended across the rear to create the perfect family kitchen and dining room, more in contact with the wonderful garden and with much nicer southern orientation.
The entrance of the house was moved to create a hall where the kitchen used to be that improves considerably the flow of the house. The remaining space of the old kitchen was used to create a utility room. The hall was also vaulted with exposed beams, whitewashed and a fireplace replacing the old kitchen AGA to create just the right focal point for a dignified entrance hall.
